Breaking News: Court Sentences Internet Fraudster To One Year Imprisonment.



Federal High Court in Kaduna State has on Thursday sentenced Obi Sobenna, an internet fraudster to one year imprisonment and has also ordered him to forfeit the sum of N340,000 to the Federal Government.

He was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to internet fraud and to obtaining money by false pretences. Justice Abubakar, nonetheless, gave Sobenna an option to pay a fine of N300,000.
The judge had also ordered him to give up his HP Laptop worth N230,000 and one Samsung S8 worth N110,000 to the Federal Government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, P.C Onyeneho had told the court that Sobenna was arrested on Feb. 29 2020, in Bauchi state by the operatives of the zonal office of the commission.

P.C Onyeneho said that the convict was arrested subsequent to a report by the Special Operation Section (ISOS) of the commission. He also added that the ISOS report revealed that the offender defrauded gullible members of the public mostly job seekers making use of different email addresses.

He also added that the convict had posed as one Alex Miller; an American working with ”Interview Manager at Teletec also known as TTEC” with the intention to gain an benefit for himself.

The anti-graft agency said that the convict had also obtained 70 dollars via iTunes Gift Card from Rebouche of the U.S. and has therefore committed a felony contrary to and punishable under Section 22 (2)(b) of the Cyber Crimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015.
