Coronavirus : We are ready to battle COVID-19– Abia govt said




The Abia State Government says it is certain in the air many states of the federation in its readiness to have the feared Coronavirus scourge should in case it manifest in the state.
Directing journalists round the isolation centres located within Amachara Specialist Hospital,in Umuahia of the state, which is one of the three selected in the state, Abia state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Osuji, described some of the features to include two doctor’s room, nurses room, laboratory chosen to host the testing kits and run other tests, X-ray room, duffing room, five-bedded isolation wards, each for males and females with conveniences, TV sets, respirators, oxygen canisters, store room containing 7,000 PPEs, treatment room, consulting room amongst others.
The state Commissioner made it known that apart from the two five-bedded wards, there is also provision for one 100-bedded extension in case of patients overflow with additional 2,500 PPEs at the same location.
He clarified that Abia State Government made attempts to acquire Testing Kits but was instructed by the NCDC to cancel the idea as according to them most of the Testing Kits in circulation today are fake.
The state commissioner therefore, pleaded to the federal government to provide Testing Kits to Abia State and every other States of the federation, emphasizing that ready availability of Testing Kits remain key to suppressing rumors on cases of the virus in the states.
He also called on the people not to panic but follow the medical guidelines given to them on how to avoid the virus.
The State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, revealed that PPEs produced in Aba which is the commercial city of the state have been delivered to the State Government and would be handed-over to the Commissioner for Health today to determine their fitness for use.
He also disclosed that Abia state workers and certified pensioners would receive their March payments from tomorrow being Friday so as to enable them stock food and get ready for a probable sit-at-home instruction should the situation get to that point.
 Chief Kalu added that the government of the state is ready to continue to pay all workers including those who have been directed to stay at home within this period and called on private sector organizations not to cut wages of workers they agree to keep at home at this period.
Continuing, chief  Okiyi also said that the State is still very confident she would not get the infection, adding that the state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, was ready to install all existing resources in the state and beyond to protect the lives of it’s citizens and residents of the State. He called on those he defined as regular politicians not to politicize the current situation the world is facing but rather honestly donate their bits to help solve the coronavirus dare.
However, repeating that Abia State has no record of coronavirus so far, the  Commissioner for Information who stated that coronavirus knows no political party, called on stakeholders who would wish to support the State in any way to approach the state Commissioner for Health.
In her remarks, the State Epidemiologist, Lady Peace Nwaogwugwu, clarified that at this moment, the state has sufficient sample bags to dispatch samples to Edo state for analysis and assured Abians that with the measures put in place by the government of the state, the state is more than prepared to grip any case arising from the coronavirus.
