This yearly event is always observed to celebrate the use of marijuana while also campaigning for it to be legalized in some parts of the world where it is prohibited. Here is everything you need to know about 4/20.

420 is commonly used in vernacular to refer to the day of celebrating marijuana which relates to the origin of the event. This even can be traced back to 1970’s in California. It is believed that 420 owes its origination to 5 high school students in California named as Steve Capper, Mark Gravich, Dave Reddix, Larry Schwartz and Jeffrey Noel.

In 1971 these 5 students of San Rafael High School reportedly created a secret code which they used to communicate to each other about meeting up later to smoke marijuana, where they normally meet up by 4:20 pm to smoke.

They were popularly called the Waldos cause they were always spotted smoking against a wall which was their chosen spot for smoking near a statue of a 19th Century scientist Louis Pasteur in their school.

Celebrating the event started in the school in the US and has slowly spread to other parts of the world. In addition to this several other occasions also takes place to mark the event.
In 2019 thousands of cannabis lovers reportedly met in Hyde Park, London, to celebrate 420 and also to protest the existing laws prohibiting the use and possession of marijuana in the UK.
