COVID-19: Governor Umahi pardons 33 convicts




Ebonyi State Governor, Governor David Umahi has just reportedly unconditionally pardon 33 convicted prison inmates who were serving various jail terms at the Abakaliki and Afikpo Correctional Center Ebonyi State.

Cletus Ofoke, the State’s Commissioner for Justice and also the Attorney General of the State, revealed this on Friday in Abakaliki, the State Capital. He noted that this decision was in line with the federal government’s policy to decongest the correction centers in the nation.

He said the convicts released includes both male and female with cases ranging from stealing, assault to occasioning bodily harm among others. He however noted that those in correction centers in other states on a death roll were not considered. He said that the governor believes that the social distancing order that has been put in place may not be attained in the correction facilities if it continues to be congested. Therefore they are released to go home to their relatives, villages and families.

The Commissioner for Justice also noted that the state Governor had earlier released over 100 persons arrested for the violation of the COVID 19 laws of the state adding to the pardon of the convict was prerogative of mercy as enshrined in the constitution.
