Why is Selena Quintanilla Day celebrated in Texas?

Who has not danced a Cumbia or dedicated a ballad to Selena Quintanilla, the queen of Tex-Mex, a woman who captivated millions with her simplicity, charisma, beauty, but above all with her talent on stage.

On Friday April 16, 1971, Selena Quintanilla was born in the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, one of the greatest exponents of the Texan genre and who marked a milestone in the world of music.

She was barely an 18-year-old teenager when on October 17, 1989 she released her first solo album, although she was always accompanied by her brothers, who called themselves Los Dinos. After a close of successes and breaking the barriers of musical genres and borders, Selena had a tragic death that shocked an entire nation and the entertainment world.

More than two decades have passed since her death and the main media in the United States and Mexico continue to publish specials that reflect the influence that the artist continues to have among the new generations. Regardless of his musical career, his tragic death was a determining factor in elevating Quintanilla to the top of Ibero-American myths.

On March 31, 1995, her best friend, manager and president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar, shot the singer in a Corpus Christi hotel after she ended her working relationship with her. Since her death, more than 10 million copies of her albums have been sold and the figure of the artist is still present.

On April 12, 1995, two weeks after Selena's death, George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared that Selena's birthday, April 16, be called "Selena Day" throughout the state. On the day of the declaration, George W. Bush said that Selena represented "the essence of the culture of South Texas" that she never forgot where she came from.

It is for this reason that every April 16 their anniversary is celebrated and numerous tributes are prepared in their honor. One of the best known is Selena's Day in Texas, a date in which honor is paid to one of the singers who has marked a point already part of the world of music.
