Two self-produced Cuban drugs have reduced severe inflammation in patients with Covid-19.

According to the director of the Cuban Epidemiology Institute, one of the two drugs is itolizumab, a monoclonal antibody produced by Cuba, developed by the Cuban Molecular Immune Center.

This drug, Itolizumab, has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and has been clinically tested in a number of unresponsive or contraindicated patients with conventional treatments. In 2013, after a successful preliminary experiment, the drug was also registered in India.

The other is an amino acid sequence for the treatment of arthritis, which is undergoing a clinical trial of phase 2. Combining the use of these two drugs has calmed "Cytokine storm," a phenomenon of the immune system of muscles. Overreaction, mass release of cytokine causes inflammation, causing organ failure in Covid-19 patients.

Cuban epidemiologist Francisco Duran said:
"These are two successes in the scientific potential of Cuba, which has brought good results in controlling the epidemic that has not been seen in any therapy or medication. Some antibodies are being studied by us and the observed data show that they are especially effective in treating patients in critical stage, who seem unlikely to recover, thereby bringing life to the sick.”
However, Mr. Duran also emphasized that more research is needed to fully assess the safety and effectiveness of the drug before officially treating Covid-19 patients.

In recent years, experimental treatments have also helped Cuba drastically reduce the Covid-19 mortality rate to 4.2% compared to the regional average of 5.9% and 6.6% above. In the past week, every day, Cuba recorded only 20 cases of Covid-19, a sharp drop from the peak of 50 to 60 cases in the middle of April.

In the past 9 days, out of more than 200 cases positive for SARS-CoV-2 virus, Cuba recorded only 2 deaths due to Covid-19.

With a population of 11 million, Cuba recorded nearly 2,000 cases of Covid-19, including 81 deaths. Compared with the United States, the incidence of Covid-19 in Cuba is 0.71 people per 100,000 people while this rate in the US is 29 people per 100,000 people.

Cuban authorities have said that two drugs produced by the country when put into use have reduced the serious infection in patients with Covid-19 in critical condition, thereby contributing to a sharp reduction. Mortality rate due to epidemic in this Caribbean island nation.
