The United Nations Calls For Assistance For Migrants

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) of the United Nations (UN) has recently called for assistance to migrants in the context of COVID-19 acute respiratory infections raging around the world.

IOM said thousands of migrants were trapped when unable to move due to border blockade and measures imposed by countries around the world to control the spread of the disease.

In response to the press, IOM Director General Antonio Vitorino warned the migrant camps are "very likely" to spread the COVID-19 epidemic. In addition, adherence to social divestment measures among these migrants is "impossible".

Emphasizing that the outbreak of COVID-19 that could spread in migrant camps will have a major impact, Vitorino said IOM is calling on governments to allow support workers to access large groups of migrants. are concentrated near border areas.

Although the COVID-19 crisis has significantly reduced the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe, the blockade measures have caused migrants to be congested on their journeys. Once the travel restrictions are lifted, these people will continue to move towards Europe, the IOM leader said.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for a comprehensive effort to stop "a tsunami of hatred and xenophobia", especially hate speech, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
