127 Journalists Die of COVID-19
According to figures from the Press Icon Campaign (PEC)
based in Geneva, Switzerland, about two-thirds of the 127 journalists died of
Covid-19 on duty.
Press officers played an important role in the fight against
the Covid-19 epidemic. They are the information force about the
spread of disease.
Recently, the Press Icon Campaign (PEC) has recorded 127
journalists who died from Covid-19 between March 1 and May 31 worldwide and
about two third of them died while on duty.
Blaise Lempen, Secretary-General of PEC, said the figures
were based on gathering from multiple sources - from national journalists'
associations, local media and journalists holding the Campaign Icon Press
around the world.
Peru is the country with the highest number of reporters
dead from Covid-19 with 15. Brazil and Mexico have 13 victims, the US has
12 journalists, Russia and the UK have 5 each.
Founded in June 2004 by a group of international journalists,
the PEC organization, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a non-governmental
organization, with the aim of strengthening legal and safety protection, for
journalists in conflict areas, civil unrest areas or when performing dangerous
missions.
