Dortmund Defeats Leipzig And Secures 2nd Place
With a double from Haaland,
Dortmund definitively secured second place in the Bundesliga on Saturday by
beating Leipzig 2-0 in shock at the top of match 33, but RB are virtually
guaranteed to compete in C1 next season.
Bayern Munich (79 pts),
Borussia Dortmund (69 pts) and RB Leipzig (63 pts) therefore form the podium
one day from the end, in the same order as last season.
The big winner of the day
is Mönchengladbach (62 pts), who returns to Leverkusen (60 pts) and takes
fourth place, qualifying for the Champions League.
Without attackers Marcus
Thuram and Alassane Pléa, injured until the end of the season, Borussia
defeated Paderborn 3-1, notably thanks to a double from their captain Lars
Stindl, and benefited from the defeat of Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin 2-0 against
the Hertha.
Bayern Munich, already
assured of the title, won without forcing its talent against Freiburg
(3-1). The "Rekordmeister" started the match with five regular
substitutes, including the French Michael Cuisance and Lucas Hernandez.
Robert Lewandowski scored
twice (24th and 37th) and broke the record for the number of goals in a season
for a foreign player, with 33 goals. The Pole also offered the assist to
Joshua Kimmich for the opening of the score (15th).
The previous
"foreign" record was set by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (31 goals) with
Dortmund in 2016-2017.
Leipzig, despite its defeat
at Dortmund, keeps three points ahead of the 5th Leverkusen and above all a
very favorable goal difference (+28), which excludes for the RB the risk of
getting out of the top-4 in extremis.
At the bottom of the table,
where Paderborn is already relegated, Bremen (17th, 28 pts) must hope for a
miracle not to go down too: beaten 3-1 at Mainz, the Werder is two points
behind the 16th and barragiste Düsseldorf (30 pts) before the last day next
Saturday.
