Former French Prime Minister And Wife Sentenced To Prison

Former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon on June 29 was officially sentenced to 5 years in prison, including 3 years in prison. While his wife, Penelope Fillon, was given a three-year suspended sentence on charges of embezzlement. 

Both must pay a fine of 375,000 Euro (432,000 USD) each.
Mr. Fillon and his wife appealed, and Mr. Fillon was not detained immediately.

Earlier in his term, former Prime Minister Fillon appointed his wife as a private secretary and paid a salary of 831,400 euros ($ 936,700). 

Judge Nathalie Gavarino stated: 
“The amount paid is not commensurate with the responsibility. Ms. Fillon was paid for a position in which she did not complete the task."
Mrs. Penelope was convicted of accomplice embezzlement.
Mr. Francois Fillon used to work as a senator, senator and holds a number of minister positions. 

He served as Prime Minister from 2007-2012 under President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mr. Fillon denied the allegations. He said his rivals tried to sabotage his campaign through his wife, and vowed to continue running.

According to the magazine, Ms. Penelope Fillon earned 100,000 euros by writing only a few articles for the literary publication La Revue des Deux Mondes. This magazine is owned by a billionaire friend of the family, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière.

Shortly working for her husband during 2012–2013, Penelope was accused of no work email and no parliamentary approval.
