Facebook To Stop Political Ads 1 Week Before US Elections
Facebook, one of the social
media giants, announced that it would freeze political ads one week before the
US presidential election on November 3.
As the presidential
elections to be held in the USA on November 3 approach, eyes are on social
media.
We have previously shared
with you that Facebook can stop all political ads before the upcoming US
presidential elections in order to prevent the spread of false information and
not affect voters.
Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg announced on his social media account the decision they took as part
of the election intervention measures.
Zuckerberg stated that he
is worried about the risk of civil disobedience increasing in an environment
where the country is so divided and the election results may result days or
even weeks later, "This election will not be an election as usual and
therefore everyone has a responsibility to protect our democracy."
Emphasizing that political
ads will not be allowed on Facebook 7 days before the elections, Zuckerberg
noted that they will add warning labels to the posts of the candidates who
declared victory before the election results are announced.
Zuckerberg also stated that
the posts claiming that those who go to vote will get coronavirus will be
removed from Facebook.
Facebook has been the
number one advertising platform for politicians for years. One of the
people who spend the most money for advertising on the platform is US President
Donald Trump.
Trump, for example, spent $
2.2 million on Facebook advertising in just one week last June.
In addition, Democratic
presidential candidate Joe Biden managed to surpass Trump by spending $ 5
million on Facebook ads in recent weeks.
